SPROUTSIDE

During the pandemic, many lost access or were limited to non-ideal working environments being left to work from home.

As a result, we came up with Sproutside, the sustainable outside co-working space that allows remote workers to explore different focus and inspiring workspaces immersed in nature surroundings through local pods

PROJECT RESEARCH

COVID changed our lives in 2019, even in the simplest of daily routines. To ensure safety, mandatory social distance was placed and since then, it has  hampered our ability to go for a walk into nature and altered how we interacted or connect with friends and family have blurred the barriers between work and social life.

According to research on the biophilic, connecting with nature improves human health and mental well-being, referring to the scientific evidence. And biophysics are already apply to different design area to minimize stress, boost cognitive function and productivity, and improve our well-being.

SECONDARY RESEARCH
Frame 100 (1).png

METHODOLOGY

In our primary research, we aimed to uncover the needs, preferences, and challenges of people working from home during covid and their nature-relatedness have impacted their mental and physical well-being.

We used five different methods to help gain a deeper insight:

Fly On the Wall Exercises, Survey, Card Sorting Activity, Interviews, Sensory Cue Workshop

PRIMARY RESEARCH

FLY ON THE WALL

Observing selected participants' unconscious
behavior instead of asking them what they do, helped us see the natural tendency of people to be in nature. Whether inside or outside, they want to be closer to the sunlight and fresh air.

SURVEY

We learned about how pandemic has changed
people's school life and work life and what emotion people have when they have a lesser chance of being outdoor.

72 Respondents

CARD SORTING

We learned about the exterior, and interior environment people want to be in and what they dislike.

INTERVIEWS

Helped us to understand the relationship with nature within people working from home and how the connection with nature impacted their wellbeing and work life.

18 Interviewees

SENSORY CUE

Tried to understand what natural or non-natural elements are missing that could enhance
people's working from home experience.

DESIGN CRITERIA

The team's favorite themes and key stories shaped the project's principles and overall design requirements, leading to draft designs, ideation sessions, and final concepts. We found that there was an opportunity to incorporate biophilia patterns into our design solution to enhance wellbeing for those working/ studying from home.

Safety; Comfort / coziness; Environmental boundaries; Accessibility to nature (physical & financial); Work environment specific for type of worker; Mood and emotion enhancer;  Simulation Technology; Outdoor exploration; Biophilia patterns

How might we enhance those who work from home well-being through nature relatedness?

IDEATION
Frame 101 (1).png

PERSONA

The user experience was tied to our persona Sarah,
a 'Then' Remote Grad Student to her 'Now' Remote Professional.

Sarah depicts the pains of being confined in space, creativity, and natural elements in her previous career as a 'Then' Remote Grad Student. In contrast, the pains continue in her new role as a 'Now' dedicated professional due to a lack of development and long work hours.

Experience Map helps identify all the touchpoints Sarah encounters through her education and the start of her professional career. In addition, the highlighted pain points help identify gaps for future opportunities within her experience enhancement.

IDEATION & CONCEPTUALIZATION

We used a Concept Voting Chart and a Evaluation Matrix to help us
narrow down our concepts and see which are the most strongest and how can we
potentially improve it. Together we rated each concept using the
following criteria.

Forming Design and Brand Language we wanted to portray cohesive themes: Alive; Innovative; Green; Organized; Cozy; Biophilic; Productive

FINAL POD CONCEPT SELECTION

Site selection in public parks for easy accessibility.

'Forest bathing' and usage of the exterior. Considerations of usability under ADAnPod structure emerges from the ground, while front full glass functions for accessnas external usable areas to work and view of the natural surrounding area

APP DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

Sproutside's app users can be a member of an outdoor work community thanks to the helpful app features. They can learn and share experiences to boost people's motivation, and they can choose a nearby place for convenient access. Personal lighting, seasonal scents, pod structure settings, and inspiration are all available through the app.

THROUGH LOCATION

The Harlem District and North Central Park, located in New York, NY, exhibit a considerable hub potential for a district with limited access to open spaces, natural settings, and stressful work/life cultures.

  • New York City's Backyard

  • Public Access

  • The North Woods

  • 2024 Renovation Project

  • Proximity to Columbia University

  • Expansive demographic

SERVICE CONSIDERATION

Business Model and Value Proposition allow for us to flush out the business side of the overall service package and considerations for a implementation proposal.

FINAL DESIGN

BRANDING & PARTNERSHIP

"Sprouts" is a work pod that assesses your mood and health status to form an optimized workspace that integrates natural elements to maximize productivity. The design of the Pod is inspired by the idea of "being wrapped around in nature." The Sprout Pod has two separate workspaces enclosed under a single undulated surface. We hope that by bringing people "Sproutside", we will expand their ability to develop themselves professionally while also providing them with chances to engage with nature.
